Marcel Duchamp, one of my favorite artists, submitted a detached urinal porcelain piece as a sculpture in April 1917 to an exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists. The exhibition tried to hide the piece from the public, but Duchamp had arranged for a high profile buyer to demand to see it and purchase it in front of journalists.  The “Fountain” went on to be declared the most influential work of art from the 20th century.
